Dayt0n,in.tl1ecounty of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silencers for Water-Distribution Systems, of which the following is-a specification.
My invention relates to water distribution systems and more particularly to a silencer adapted to absorb the vibrations resulting from the pumping operations and prevent the transmission of such vibrations in the form of noise through the service lines of the distribution syste In residence water distribution systems of the p-nuematic type it is customary to pump a supply of water and air into a suit able hermetically sealed tank until the pressure reaches a predetermined point where upon suitable automatic means operates to arrest the operation of the pump until the pressure in the supply tank falls to a pre determined point whereupon the operation of the pump is resta'blishedL The time and frequency of the successive periods of operation depend upon the rapidity with which water is used from the tank. The operative pumping period may therefore occur at any time of the day or night. 7
The vibrations incident to the operation of the pump are transmitted through the distribution pipe line causing disagreeable noises and disturbing the residents of the house. 7 I
The primary object of the present invention is to provide means for absorbing such vibrations and so obviate the noises resulting therefromt With the above primary and other. incidental db-jects in view as will more fully appear in the specification, the invention consists of the features of construction, the parts and combinations thereof and the mode of operation or their equivalents as hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view, somewhat diagrammatic, of a pneumatic pressure water system to which the silencer forming the subject matter hereof has been applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional Like'parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the several -v1ews.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the supply tank charged with water and air under pressure by the pump 2. The pump is motor driven from the electric motor 3 the operation of which is governed by an automatic pressure operated cut-out 4. The pump is started automatically when the pressure falls to a given degree and is automatically arrested when the maximum pressure has been restored. From the tank 1 there" lead throughout the house distribution or service pipes 5 communicating with Various faucets, bath tub, etc, It is by means of this service pipe that the noise resulting from pumping operations is transmittedto all parts of the house, particularly towhere faucets are located.
To overcome this difficulty there is interposed in the service pipe 5 a' silencer 6 comprising two telescopic members having an interposed body of non-rigid material.
This device is somewhat similar to a pack ing gland or stufling box of exaggerated proportion relation to the connected pipe whereby there can be no possibility of metal- Liccontaet between the interconnected memers.
Referring particularly to Fig. ,2,there is employed a chambered body portion 7 into one end of which one section'S of the service pipe is screw threaded in the usual manner. This body portion isjprovided with an internal flange 9 the inner diameterbf which is of materially largersize than that of the second service pipe section 10 to be connected. The difference in the diameters is sufficient to afford an annular space around the pipe section 10 of such size that avoidance of metallic contact between the section 10 and the flange is insured.
Insertib'le within the open end of the .bpdy portion is a gland member 11 adjustable in relation with the body portion to compress between the end of such gland member and the flange 9 an annular body of non rigid packing material 12 adapted to absorb the vibrations and prevent their transmission to the section 10.
The bore of the gland portion 11, like the flange 10 is much greater in diameter than that of the pipe section 10 extending therethrough. The pipe section 10 is held second collar or annular band 14 of non rigid material adapted to absorb the vibrations is located about the end of the pipe section intermediate the flared end 13 thereof and the flange 9. This band may be of rubber or other suitable yielding packing material, as may also the body 12; 7
It is customary in such installations to employ service pipes of comparative small sizes, as one half, three quarters or one inch pipe having screw threaded joints. The primary function of the stufiing box herein disclosed is that of absorbing vibration and reducing noises, and its use as a connection between the sections of pipe is incidental to its use as a silencer. While in the drawing the silencer herein disclosed has been shown located in the discharge pipe leading from the tank, it will be obvious that it may be located in the supply pipe between the pump and tank, or in both said locations.
Having thus described my invention I claim;
1. A water distribution system comprising a pumping apparatus, a storage tank for water and air under pressure, service pipes communicating with the tank and separated into independent sections, and a stufiin box connecting said independent pipe sections, the packing portion of said stuffing box forming a dampening means between said pipe sections for the purpose of intercepting vibrations induced by the operation of the pumping apparatus and preventing the transmission of noise through said service pipes.
2. A water distribution system comprising a pumping apparatus and a distribution conduit, characterized by a silencer in said system comprising two telescopic conduit sections of materially different diameters whereby an annular space surrounds the smaller section within the larger section and an interposed body of vibration absorbent material between said telescopic sections adapted to intercept the vibrations induced by the pumping apparatus and prevent the transmission through said conduit of noises resultin therefrom.
3. A water distribution system including a pumping apparatus and a distribution pipe, characterized by a silencer in said pipe comprising a chambered housing having an internal flange, a pipe section eX- tending thereinto to a point beyond said flange, a compression member coacting with the said flange, the internal diameters of said compression member and said internal flange being sufiiciently greater than the diameter of said pipe to obviate possibility of metallic contact therewith, and a body of vibration absorbent material surrounding said pipe section and interposed between the flange and compression member, adapted to intercept vibrations incident to the operation of the pumpin' apparatus and obviate the transmission 0' the resulting sounds through said pipe.
4. A water distribution system including a pumping apparatus, and a distribution pipe, characterized by a silencer in said pipe comprising a chambered housing having an internal flange, a pipe section eiitending theremto to a polnt beyond the said flange, said pipe section being flared at its my hand this 21st day of November, A.
