Abstract

The tufts of a tufted pile fabric or carpet of which the tufts comprise thermoplastic fibres are set by applying heat to the bases of the tufts at the back of the fabric to bond the tufts securely to the fabric base. The tufts may comprise nylon fibres or contain a high proportion of these fibres. The fabric base may be made of paper, non-woven fabric, woven paper, hessian or cotton fabric. Preferably, heat is applied by a flame from a gas burner applied at a glancing angle or almost horizontally to the back of the fabric so as not to harm the fabric base. Alternatively, heat may be applied by conduction from at least one hot roller over which the fabric passes or by radiant heat from infrared heaters. After locking of the tufts, a second backing is applied to the fabric.
