Abstract

In the contact process for H2SO4 manufacture, the tail gas is scrubbed with ammonia to give an aqueous solution containing ammonium sulphite, ammonium bisulphite and ammonium sulphate which is utilized by introducing into a roasting stage in which SO2 is produced from sulphur-containing materials. The solution may be sprayed into a multi-hearth or fluid bed kiln during roasting or, in the case of a fluid bed kiln, may be added to the material prior to roasting. Operating temperatures for fluid bed kilns may be 1000 DEG C. for the roasting of zinc blende and 900-950 DEG C. for pyrites, and for multi-hearth kilns may be 950 DEG C. for zinc blende and 850-900 DEG C. for pyrites. The roasting is conducted to yield a roasting gas containing at least 12% by volume SO2 which may be used to make H2SO4 having a low nitrogen content.
