Abstract

SO2 is removed from gases by passing them countercurrent to aq. H2SeO3 in at least two stages, the Se formed in the first stage being completely removed from the liquor circulating in this stage, and the SO2 being completely removed from the gases in the second stage. The first stage may be operated discontinuously adding fresh H2SeO3 intermittently, after withdrawing a portion of the exhausted liquor. The Se may be removed from the H2SO4 -containing soln. withdrawn from the first stage and oxidized to H2SeO3 which is used to maintain to H2SeO3 content in the second stage. The product H2SO4 soln. may be concentrated by evaporation e.g. by passing the hot gases to be treated therethrough. The second stage may be operated continuously and the H2SeO3 content may be maintained at above stoichiometric requirements e.g. at 42 g. SeO2/l, and the H2SO4 content may be kept to a minimum e.g. 77 g./l.
