Abstract
1,089,757. Photo-electric fire alarms. THRINGS ADVANCED DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Aug. 8, 1966 [Aug. 14, 1965], No. 34907/65. Heading G1A. In a fire alarm of the kind described in 1, 003, 075 and having a detector 12 with a filter 11 giving an electrical output in response to radiation in the 2-7 micron region and a rotating mirror 10 directing on to the detector in sequence radiation from sections of the space to be protected: the mirror is rotated at a slow speed, e.g. 1 revolution per 30 seconds, and the alarm circuitry includes an amplifier which receives the detector signal and is responsive to the flicker frequency of a flame, e.g. 1-30 cycles per second; an output from the amplifier stops the mirror and initiates an alarm if the output is still present after a predetermined delay. If a steady source of infrared radiation is sensed, e.g. an electric fire, the mirror stops only momentarily and no alarm is sounded due to the amplifier output ceasing long before the delay time is up. Such a repetitive stopping may be signalled to a control desk as may the momentarily stopping due to the sensing of a small steady source of infrared radiation 23, e.g. a heated resistor or dimly lit lamp, within the globe 15 which would indicate correct functioning of the apparatus.
