Abstract

A process for the production of a condensation product from a dihydric phenol and an epihalohydrin comprises reacting them in the presence of at least one mol. of an alkaline condensation agent per mol. of dihydric phenol, in the presence of an emulsifier and/or a protective colloid and in the presence of a solvent miscible with water and water. The phenol and epihalohydrin may be reacted in equimolar proportions until the desired molecular weight is obtained when the product is reacted with further epihalohydrin. The epoxy containing products may be reacted, without isolation, with compounds of the formula NHR1R11, where R1 and R11 are H, alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, mercaptoalkyl or aminoalkyl radicals. Emulsifiers specified are: adducts of epoxides with glycols or diamines, fatty, aliphatic sulphonic or alkyl-aromatic sulphonic acid salts; protective colloids are starch and cellulose derivatives, polyvinyl alcohol and polyethylene oxides; and water-miscible solvents are alcohols and ketones. The products are obtained as a powder or as small beads.
