Abstract

Solutions, for use as flocculants, comprise (1) water soluble products of (a) 3 to 100 moles of an alkylene imine, and (b) 1 mole of a hydrocarbon which is substituted by at least 2 reactive groups which are epoxy groups or halogen atoms situated in an a -position to a hydroxy or epoxy group, and (2) a completely water miscible organic solvent, water, or a mixture thereof.ALSO:A solution containing at least 2% by wt. of a water-soluble condensation product is prepared by condensing (i) 3 to 100 moles of an imine of general formula <FORM:1065114/C3/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 are each hydrogen or C1- 6 alkyl, and (ii) 1 mole of hydrocarbon compound which is substituted by at least 2 reactive groups which are epoxy groups, or halogen atoms situated in an a -position to a hydroxyl or epoxy group, in water, a completely water-miscible organic solvent or a mixture thereof. Suitable compounds (ii) are di-and tri-epoxides, halo-alkyl epoxides and di-halo alkanols, many are specified. Specified solvents are water, acetone, alcohols, dimethyl formamide and dioxane. The reaction with polyepoxides or halo-alkyl epoxides may be carried in the presence of equivalent amounts of aqueous hydrogen halide, or mineral acid, since the halo-alcohols formed initially react more rapidly with the amine. The examples describe the preparation of solutions of the condensates of (1)-(3), (6) and (8)-(11) ethylene imine and epichlorohydrin, the reactions in (6) and (11) being effected in the presence of concentrated hydrochloric and hydroiodic acids respectively; (4) C-methyl-ethylene imine and epichlorohydrin; (5) dichlorohydrin and ethylene-imine; and (7) ethyleneimine and the product obtained by hydrolysing 1 mole of dimethyl-di-[(p-2,3-epoxypropyl)-phenyl]-methane, with 1 mole of hydrochloric acid.
