Abstract

A printing type member 1 comprises a plurality of parallel elongated members disposed closely adjacent each other and held together in a bundle, the operative surface of the member being formed by the adjacent ends of the members. The members may be metallic wires or of a permeable material having interconnecting pores and capable of absorbing ink, said members being secured together by a pressing operation, or by solder, adhesive or a paste. In the embodiment shown the wires are assembled in a casing 4 and displaced according to an engraved pattern in a plate 2 by vibration or by pneumatic pressure through a conduit 5. The resultant assembly is clamped together by a metal sleeve and the casing 4 may be used to supply ink through the channels between the wires, the non-printing end surface adjacent the pattern being sealed by lacquer, solder or chrome plating. The pattern or design may be in relief or recessed and printing may be accomplished, for instance, by passing ammonia therethrough on to a suitably sensitive paper. In a modification for multi-colour printing a plurality of bundles is combined to form a composite printing pattern, each bundle having a separate ink supply and the operative surfaces being in the same plane.
