Abstract

1,088,147. Universal joints. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. June 27, 1966 [July 8, 1965], No. 28922/65. Heading F2U. In a Hooke's type universal joint, for a steering column, each arm 46 of the spider 14 is mounted in a polyamide, acetal resin or polyurethane bush 48 contained in a bearing cup 50 having a heavy interference fit in its associated yoke arm 24. The plastics bushes 48 may be on interference fit or bonded in the bearing cups 50 which, as shown, have hexagon heads and are a screwed interference fit or, in Fig. 6 (not shown), are a push interference fit and retained by a circlip (256), in the respective yoke arms 24. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the spider is formed by two pins (146, 147) projection welded together with their axes axially offset, the overlap giving a fail-safe relationship. The base of each plastics bush 48 has an internal dimple 54 which engages the end face of the respective spider arm 46 to provide resilient centring of the spider relative the yokes 10, 12, which yokes may be mild steel pressings or forgings, welded to the steering shaft or secured thereon by a cotter pin or, in Fig. 6 (not shown), by splines.
