Abstract

A metallic part of austenitic stainless e.g. 18% Cr-8% Ni-3% Mo steel, hypereutectoid alloy steel containing at least 11% Mn e.g. 11-14% Mn with 1-1.3% C and max. 0.6% Si, or titanium metal or alloy containing at least 90% Ti, whose superficial crystalline structure exhibits a high density of lines representing planes of shear when cold-hardened, is made resistant to seizure and wear when subjected to friction e.g. in gears and bearings by deep cold-hardening, e.g. by cold hammering with a hammer with a striated striking face, knurling or cold rolling, to produce striations on the surface of the part at right angles to the direction of application of friction to the finished parts, and subjecting the cold-hardened part to superficial incorporation of at least one of the elements N, C, S, Se and Te by maintaining contact between the part and a fluid e.g. fused salt bath or gaseous atmosphere containing the element(s) for 1-6 hours at 400-590 DEG C. A typical sulphurizing and cyaniding bath has the composition by weight: 0.5% Na2S, 4% each of Na CN and KCN, 16% NaCNO, 17% KCNO, 31% Na2CO3 and K2CO3, remainder NaCl and KCl. The cold-hardened part may be successively subjected to (carbo) nitriding, e.g. in an air-blown bath comprising 32 to 35% KCNO and 50 to 55% KCN, then sulphurizing.
