Abstract

Cross-linked dextron in bead form is produced by dispersing into epichlorhydrin, in the presence of C10-C18 fatty acids as suspension stabilizers an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution of dextran containing 20-50% by weight of dextran, allowing the dextran and epichlorohydrin to cross-link, freeing the cross-linked product from excess epichlorhydrin, and swelling and washing it in hot water. Reaction is suitably effected at 50 DEG C. or below, and the initial dispersion may be stirred to prevent coagulation. The degree of cross-linking depends on the amount of alkali initially present, and values from 2.8 up to 8.5 are given in the examples. Suitably 0.1-2.0% of fatty acids are present.
