Abstract

1,087,852. Drying webs. JOHNSON CORPORATION. Oct. 9, 1964 [Nov. 6, 1963], No. 41386/64. Heading F4G. [Also in Division F2] A steam-heated, horizontal axis, drying cylinder 10 for paper or textile webs is rotated at a speed at which the condensate is in a " rimming " condition, i.e. the condensate is so centrifuged as to be uniformly circumferentially distributed, and the condensate is withdrawn through a plurality of radial pipes 18, rotating with, and spaced lengthwise of, the cylinder, by pressure differential existing between the steam pressure in the cylinder and the pressure in a condensate receiver 22, such withdrawal being at such a rate as to maintain a film of condensate of varying depth lengthwise of the cylinder. The pipes 18 are so arranged that the rimming condensate is deeper at the cylinder ends thereby reducing the heat-exchange and the tendency to over-dry at said ends. The pressure differential is sufficient to overcome centrifugal and gravitational forces acting on the condensate. The pipes 18 connect collecting heads 12, 14, 16 to a central pipe 20 leading to the receiver 22. The heads include inlets spaced at an adjustable distance from the cylinder inner periphery by screws and a spring clamping structure described in Specification 928,340.
