1,087,494. Fire extinguishing apparatus. SVENSKA SKUMSLACKNINGS A.B. April 14, 1965 [Feb. 23, 1965], No. 15920/65. Heading A5A. Fire extinguishing apparatus for tanks of inflammable liquids comprises a magazine 12 enclosing a folded hose which is supplied with fire extinguishant, preferably foam, by means of pipe 10, and is characterised in that the magazine has an opening 18 into the inflammable liquid through which the hose can be unfolded, the opening being sealed by a diaphragm 20 for example of thin glass or plastics material, designed to burst at an internal pressure only slightly higher than the maximum external pressure exerted on the diaphragm by a full tank, and sustained on its inner side by a loose disc 22 or similar loose support which is thrown off as the magazine opens. For example the diaphragm may be constructed to withstand an external pressure of 60 ft. water and burst at an internal pressure of 63-90 ft. Diaphragm 20 may be clamped at its margin between a mounting surface 26 and a clamping ring 28 and may be covered by a loose protective cap 34 provided with elastic sealing ring 36.
