Abstract

844,387. Pressure-relieving devices for fluids. BLACK, SIVALLS & BRYSON Inc. Jan. 28, 1957, No. 3001/57. Class 135. A rupture unit for a safety device comprises a control element 19, a segmented supporting element 20 mounted in backing contact with a rupturable sealing element 22 and an annular retaining ring 21. The control element 19 of light gauge sheet material is retained in contact with the segments 29 of the supporting element by means of clips 34 attached to the supporting element and having fingers 37 extending over the marginal edge of the control element. The supporting element 20, the sealing element 22 and the retaining ring 21 are secured together by spot welds at their marginal edges and the rupture unit thus constituted is clamped between clamping rings mounted over the relief opening of the vessel or appliance to be protected. The clips 34 are designed to give way at the predetermined calculated safety pressure thereby rendering the supporting member 20 ineffective so that the sealing member ruptures. An additional disc 40 may be inserted between the supporting element 20 and the pressure sealing element 22 to protect the pressure sealing element from the points of the segments 29. In another embodiment the rupture unit is rendered capable of functioning under vacuum pressures by reversing the order of assembly of the elements. In a further embodiment the sealing element is contained between a supporting element and control element on each side so that it relieves both pressure and vacuum.
