Abstract

A method of forming a protective fluoride coating on the surface of articles composed of Mg or Mg base alloys, e.g. Mg-Li, comprises the steps of immersing the articles in a 30-45% by weight ammonium bifluoride aqueous solution and passing an alternating electric current through the solution via the articles which are connected as electrodes. The voltage of the A.C. may be progressively increased until it lies between 110 and 120 volts A.C. and be maintained at this value for at least 30 minutes after the current falls to less than 5 amps/sq.ft. of article surface. Articles may first be cleaned, e.g. with hot tetrachlorethylene vapour. If the articles comprise Mg-Li, they may be heated to at least 200 DEG C., Li exuded as a result of the heating being removed by immersion in continuously circulating water at a temperature below 85 DEG C. The articles are then treated in the NH4F HF, e.g. at a temperature below 27 DEG C. with continuous relative movement between them and the electrolyte. The resultant fluoride coated articles may be coated with resin, e.g. an epoxy-melamine or polyurethane, and may then be painted. The examples are of treating Mg alloy sheet composed of 84.5% Mg, 14% Li, 1% Al and 0.5% trace metals and impurities.ALSO:A Mg or Mg base alloy article with an electrolytically produced fluoride coating (see Division C7) may be given a resinous coating, e.g. of epoxy-melamine or polyurethane, and optionally a final coat of paint or other finish. The resinous coating may be applied in successive layers with each being dried and cured. In Example 1, a polyurethane coating is dried and cured at 150 DEG C for 1 hour.
