Abstract

A light-coloured reinforcing filler for rubbers is constituted by a crude filler that has had a conjugated diolefin hydrocarbon adsorbed on the surface thereof, polymerized through the agency of the heat of adsorption, and thereby had a polymer "grafted" thereon. The support is preferably dried and deaerated before use. Excess polymer may be removed by a suitable solvent. The preferred fillers are kaolinite and silico-aluminates and the preferred diolefin is isoprene. The reinforcing fillers are very suitably used in butyl rubber compositions which exhibit lower compression set so as to admit of their use for cable insulation and inner tubes.
