Abstract

1,086,643. Rolling; stretching. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Feb. 14, 1966 [Feb. 18, 1965], No. 7091/65. Headings B3E and B3M. A method of reducing metal strip comprises feeding the strip 1 by bridle rollers to a first back-up roll 5, through an S-shaped path defined by a pair of work rolls 7, 8, around a second back-up roll 6 and around further bridle rollers. The bridle rollers and work rolls are driven by conventional means through gearing (12)-(23), Fig. 2 (not shown). The work rolls 7, 8 are supported in a housing 29 mounted for rotation about an axis 30 to vary the angle a. The backup rolls 5, 6 are supported in frames (36), (37), Fig. 3 (not shown). The frame (36) is pivotally connected to a fixed support (42) and the separation of the rolls 5, 6 is adjustable by means of a screw (45) on the frame (36) and a nut (46) fixed on the frame (37), the frame (37) being held in position by a bar (44). To insert the strip into the apparatus, the rolls 5, 6 are separated and the housing 29 rotated through 180 degrees by a handle (65), Fig. 5 (not shown), so that the strip can be threaded directly between the rolls. The work rolls 7, 8 are returned to their original position and the back-up rolls 5, 6 moved towards each other. The strip 1 is tensioned by the bridle rollers (3), (4), (9), (10). As the tension increases, the strip 1 pulls the rolls 7, 8 into contact with the strip at positions 30, 32, 33 to form three passes. A pair of load cells (53), Fig. 9 (not shown), are carried by cross-heads (54). The cross-heads (54) are adjustable so that each load cell has an equal load. The bearings of the work roll 8 are mounted in axle boxes (63), Fig. 6 (not shown), to allow the roll to float in the plane 28. The plane 31 may be horizontal, Fig. 11 (not shown), and the rolls 7, 8 may be of different diameters, Fig. 10 (not shown).
