Abstract

1,085,573. Electro-photographic image reproduction. RANK XEROX Ltd. Feb. 5, 1965 [Feb. 17, 1964], No. 5081 /65. Heading G2H. A method of forming a latent electro-static image on an imaging layer comprises modifying the triboelectric charging susceptibility of a surface of the layer in imagewise configuration and bringing this surface into frictional contact with a material remote in the triboelectric series from at least one of the modified and the unmodified portions of the imaging surface so that a differential charge pattern is set up between image and non-image areas of the imaging layer. The imaging surface may be modified by: (a) the use of a surface layer of material which is photo-polymerized by ultraviolet light in an imagewise exposure, (b) the use of a surface contaminant, comprising oil based ink, or human body oils, applied to the surface in an image configuration. The latent image formed by either method is developed by cascading with toner particles carried on beads as is well known. The developed image may be transferred to another surface electrostatically or adhesively. Heat fixing is used. Alternatively the latent image is scanned by a device which senses charge variation, or again charge induced plastic deformation techniques may be used. In the copying apparatus of Fig. 2, an imaging surface 11, consisting of a substrate thinly coated with a photo-resist of cinnamate esters of polyvinyl alcohol and of cellulose, is fed from roll 12 to take-up roll 16 and is exposed to a projected image at 17. Triboelectric charging roller 18, having a surface coating of viscose rayon, nylon, wool, or the like, then differentially charges surface 11 which is then moved to the cascade developing unit 19. The toner particles and carrier bead coating are chosen to give positive or negative development. Heat fixing takes place at 27, or solvent vapour fixing or adhesive spraying may be used.
