Abstract

1,085,280. Stuffing-boxes and piston packing. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. June 18, 1965 [June 18, 1964], No. 25262/64. Headings F2B and F2T. A packing gland for a plunger 1 in a cylinder 2 of, for example, a liquid spring, comprises a resilient packing ring 13 supported by a metal backing plate 12, a backing ring 21 of porous metal disposed between the packing ring and the backing plate and in engagement with the plunger, and a source 6 of lubricant which communicates with the backing ring 21 whereby lubricant enters the pores thereof and lubricates the engaging surfaces of the plunger and backing ring. The packing ring 13, which may be of natural or synthetic rubber preferably having a filling of fibrous material, is compressed between the plate 12 and a pressure plate 11 from which pegs 15 project through the ring 13 and enter bores 17 in the plate 12. A layer of porous material is provided between the ring 13 and plate 11 and a spacer 7 is provided between the plate 12 and a closure plug 4 housing a bush 5 formed with a cavity 6 filled with lubricant that can flow through the clearance between the plunger and the ring 7 and plate 12 to the ring 21. Radial slots 23 in the plate 12 serve to distribute lubricant over the ring 21 which may be of sintered aluminium bronze powder. The invention is stated to be applicable to piston packing.
