1,190,937. Piston, shaft and joint-making packing. DOWTY FUEL SYSTEMS Ltd. 7 Nov., 1967 [24 Nov., 1966], No. 52595/66. Addition to 1,056,145. Headings F2B and F2T. In sealing means between two members, e.g. a piston and cylinder, comprising a sealing ring 16 and a resilient wedge ring 18 located in an annular groove 13 in one, 11, of the members, the rings having complementally engaging wedge surfaces 17 and 19 and the sealing ring being urged against one side wall 14 of the groove and a cylindrical surface 12 of the other member by the wedge ring 18 which engages the other side wall 15 of the groove, the ring 18 is a split metal ring of uniform cross-section and, in its unstressed state, has a non-circular shape as indicated at 18<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, whereby when assembled it is of substantially circular shape. The ring 16 may be of P.T.F.E. with a filler such as powdered ceramic. In the rotary shaft seal shown in Fig. 3 and comprising a carbon ring 25 carried by a body 26 and urged by springs 27 against a flange 24 on the shaft 22, the body 26 is sealed to the housing bore 28 in accordance with the invention by a sealing ring 16 and a wedge ring 18 located in a groove 13 in the body 26. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a seal assembly according to the invention is used to form a seal between two members (31, 32) which may be rigidly connected or have slight relative movement in use.
