Abstract

1,085,235. Valves. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 1, 1964 [Oct. 4, 1963], No. 39104/63. Heading F2V. In a manually operated high-pressure valve e.g. for use at 400-500 p.s.i.g. and 300-420‹ C. as a bleed-off valve in the main CO 2 cooling- gas circuit of a gas-cooled nuclear reactor, a valve closure 17 is displaceable by a spindle 18 rotated by a hand wheel 28 whereby a nut 21, constrained against axial movement by a stud 22, engages with a spindle thread 20. The closure 17 is freely rotatable upon spindle 18 but is constrained against axial movement and is able to tilt slightly relative thereto. The nut 21 and thread 20 are contained within the valve bonnet 19 sealed by natural or synthetic rubber 0-rings 24, 27 with a leak measurement tapping 29 provided between spindle rings 24. The spindle 18 rotates in carbon bushes 23 which maintain the seals cool. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) opposed valve ports (34) are obturated by a sliding closure (35) comprising plates (36) urged apart by springs (not shown) and displaceable upon a stem (37), prevented from rotation by radial projections thereupon engaging recesses in the body 30 and which is axially displaced by engagement of a screw (40) therein with a non-axially displaceable threaded shaft (42) rotated by a hand wheel (44). The threadedly engaged parts of both valves are made of nitriding steel.
