Abstract
Organic iron complexes especially trisanthranilhydroxamato-iro (trivalent), [bis-chloro-l-leucine-hydroxamato-iron (trivalent)] acid and tris - nicotinhydroxamato - iron (trivalent) are prepared by reacting in a polar solvent a soluble ferrous or ferric salt with a hydroxyamic acid of the formula R.CONHOMe or a soluble salt thereof, wherein R is a heterocyclic radical or a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical having up to 18 C atoms inclusive and containing 1, 2 or 3 amino groups and Me is H or a cation rendering the said hydroxamic acid soluble, and then optionally oxidizing the reaction product. Potassium anthranilhydroxamate is prepared from methyl anthranilate and hydroxylamine in the presence of KOH. Pharmaceutical compositions suitable for use in iron therapy comprise the complexes of the invention and a carrier therefor.
