Abstract

1,084,818. Measuring acceleration, electrically. DATAWELL N.V. Sept.18, 1964 [Sept.19, 1963], No.38221/64. Heading G1N. A transducer to measure linear displacement (accelerometer) comprises disc electrodes 2, 4 (Fig. 3) connected to an A.C. source Eo; a rod electrode 7, displaceable longitudinally by acceleration in a vertical direction, within a clearance hole 6 in the electrode 4. Connected to the electrode 4 is a conductive skirt 5. A potential, proportional to the square of the distance by which part of the electrode 7 is above the electrode 4, is taken off between electrode 7 and electrode 4 as a measure of the displacement. The electrodes are enclosed in a container 1 of synthetic plastics which may be filled with an insulating liquid dielectric material, and movement of electrode 7 effects a capacity variation, or alternatively the container may contain a conductive liquid (e.g. a saline solution) and variation of conductance is effected. The rod 7 is supported by insulated spring blade 8. A mathematical analysis is given.
