Abstract

752,699. Electric tests ; capacitors. ENGINEERING RESEARCH CORPORATION, Ltd. May 18, 1954 [June 11, 1953], No. 14577/54. Class 37. In apparatus for measuring the fluid contents of an irregular container by means of a measuring condenser having the fluid as its dielectric, and having one electrode shaped so that the surface level length of contact of the electrode with the fluid at every level is proportional to the surface area of the fluid at that level whereby a linear relationship is obtained between capacity and fluid quantity, is characterized in the provision of an electrostatic shield which eliminates the effects of stray capacities. The measuring condenser (Figs. 2, 3) comprises vertical, coaxial, cylindrical members 3, 4, the outer one, 3, being completely covered with conducting material but with apertures 7 to allow the fluid 8 to pass into the space between members 3, 4, and the inner one, 4, having a profiled conductive layer 13 on a rigid insulation member 29 co-operating with the electrode on member 3. A further conductive layer 6 covers substantially the entire remaining area of the member 29, with an edge portion 34 uniformly spaced from the profiled edge 35 of layer 13. In the complete circuit arrangement (Fig. 1) the voltage drop across the measuring condenser 2 is compared in a bridge network with that across a reference condenser 22, any unbalance voltage being amplified at 15 and fed to a servomotor 24 which rebalances the network by adjusting the voltage across the reference arms, and also drives an indicator 28, indicating the fluid content of the container 1. The further conductive layer 6 is earthed to act as a shield against fringe capacity effects, and to eliminate the capacity between electrode 3 and the inside surface of the inner electrode 13. The measuring condenser may be other than cylindrical and either or both electrodes may be profiled. The gauge may be used with liquids and powdered or granular solid dielectric materials.
