Abstract

In a method of measuring the volume of a medium, the medium is placed in a container occupied by compressible fluid at atmospheric pressure and coupled to a second container containing said compressible fluid at a pressure other than atmospheric, the resultant pressure when equal in the containers being a measure of the volume of the medium whereby the average density of the medium may be determined. As shown in Fig.1, the apparatus comprises a container 1 for the medium, pipe 2 connected to a tank 6, valves 4, 8, a pressure gauge 5 and a pump 7, arranged so that, in use, pressure is raised in the tank 6, valve 4 is opened and the change in pressure recorded as a measure of the volume of the medium. In a modification, for measuring the volume of flowing materials, the materials are fed in along a conveyer to either of two containers and the volumetric measurements taken, as above. In a further embodiment, as shown in Fig.4, coal is delivered from a conveyer 30 to a weighing conveyer 31, the weight being determined and signalled electrically along a line 32, the coal being passed to a chamber 34 enclosing rotatable paddles 35 to ensure flow of the coal. The volume of the coal is determined by the above method and the pressure change detected by a transducer 45 to produce a signal in an output line 51. The two signals are integrated at 50, 52 and the density of the coal determined by the output of an analogue circuit 53.
