Abstract

1521711 Metering fluent material SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 16 July 1975 [18 July 1974] 29822/75 Heading B8N [Also in Divisions GI and F4] A method of filling bottles with fluid under pressure, e.g. with liquefied gas, to produce a predetermined net weight of fluid in the bottle comprises the steps of reading the weight the bottle would have if entirely empty, measuring the initial weight of the bottle plus any fluid therein, deriving the weight of fluid to be added, measuring the density of the fluid and hence deriving the volume to be added, and adding the required volume. Bottles are weighed at 6, and at 12 data regarding the tare weight of the bottle and the date when the bottle is next to be tested are read from the bottle. A computer 10 calculates the weight and volume of fluid to be added, the density of the fluid being determined at 20. The bottle is filled at a filling station on a turntable 10, the filling station including a piston 10 and cylinder 40. The position of the piston may be detected by series Ca, Cr and Cf of pneumatic sensors, and computer 10 controls the position of valve 46, through which fluid is supplied to one or other side of the piston, and the position of valve 30, which directs fluid discharged from cylinder 38 either to the bottle 26 or to a reservoir, so that the correct volume of fluid is introduced into the bottle.
