Abstract

1,084,683. Agitators; driving. EMERSON ELECTRIC CO. March 5, 1965 [March 12, 1964], No. 9561/65. Heading B1C. [Also in Divisions D1 and F2] An oscillating agitator 3, Fig. 1, of an agitating machine, such as a washing machine, is driven by an oscillating type hydraulic motor 5 which is actuated by a hydraulic supply through a pipe 6 from a constant delivery pump 7 driven by a constant speed electric motor 8. A valve device 20 (see also Fig. 3) regulates a bypass to a reservoir 10 from a pipe 13 to outlet 14 to control the supply to the motor 5. The device 20 also includes a torque sensing device and a speed sensing device for the agitator. The former comprises a differential piston 60 which is urged to the right by the pressure in pipes 6 and 13, which is a function of the agitator torque, to tend to close the bypass from 13 to 14. This results in a greater flow to motor 5 and a consequent increase in speed thereof. This increase in speed is reflected in an increase of pressure drop across an orifice 55 from the motor outlet pipe 11 to a pipe 12 to reservoir 10 which acts on the end of piston 60 to tend to move it back to the left against spring 50 and the pump pressure to restore a balanced condition with the agitator operating at a higher speed. In a modified arrangement the speed sensing orifice is arranged on the input side of the hydraulic motor. It is stated that a variable output pump could be used the output of which is controlled instead of the bypass arrangement. The agitator could be of the planetary type or the reciprocating vertical type or it may be the tub 2 of the machine.
