Abstract

Novel compounds of the general formula <FORM:1084450/C2/1> (wherein R5 represents Cl, Br or a C1- 4 alkoxy radical, Z represents -CH = CH- or -CH2 CH2-, and either R1 and R2 are the same or different and each represent H or Me and R3 and R4 are the same or different and each represent a C1- 4 alkyl radical or -NR3R4 represents a pyrrolidino, piperidino, piperazino, 4-methylpiperazino or 4-(C2 or C3 hydroxyalkyl)-piperazino radical, or R4 represents a C1- 4 alkyl radical, R3 and R1 together represent -(CH2)2- or -(CH2)3- and R2 represents H, or R4 represents a C1- 4 alkyl radical, R3 and R2 together represent -(CH2)3- or -(CH2)4- and R1 represents H) are prepared as follows: (a) in all cases except where - NR3R4 is piperazino or 4-hydroxyalkylpiperazino, by dehydration, by the action of mineral acids, strong organic acids, acetic anhydride, SOCl2 or POCl3, of the corresponding 4-hydroxy compounds, themselves obtainable by a Grignard reaction from compounds of the general formula <FORM:1084450/C2/2> (b) when -NR3R4 is piperazino, by treating the corresponding 4-methylpiperazino compounds with a C1- 4 alkyl chloroformate and hydrolysing the resulting 4-alkoxycarbonylpiperazino compounds; (c) when -NR3R4 is 4-hydroxyalkylpiperazino, by treating the product of (b) with a hydroxyalkylating agent. The products may be converted into acid addition salts. Pharmaceutical compositions, e.g. tablets, dragees, injectable solutions and suppositories, having neuroleptic and sedative activity, comprise compounds (I) or their acid addition salts, together with a physiologically acceptable carrier.
