In a gas turbine installation suitable for burning small amounts of combustible gases in air, e. g. methane and air such as mine air, the air-methane mixture is supplied to a catalytic combustion chamber 5 filter 1 a compressor 2 and either an exhaust gas heated heater 4 or a parallel connected auxiliary combustion chamber 3 having its own fuel supply. The auxiliary combustion chamber pre-heats the mixture during starting. The products from the combustion chamber 5 drive a turbine 6 the shaft of which is common to the compressor 2, an electric generator 7, an exciter 8 and a starting motor 9. Clean air may be injected at the compressor inlet to alter the concentration of methane in the mixture and limit the temperature before the turbine. The clean air injection and the fuel supply to the auxiliary combustion chamber may be controlled automatically. The heater 4 may be omitted, in which case the auxiliary combustion chamber is operated continuously.
