Abstract

1,083,816. High-frequency discharge tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. April 14, 1965 [May 8, 1964], No. 16097/65. Heading H1D. A high-frequency electron discharge device, e.g. a reflex klystron, has a conductive body 7 surrounding an electron beam interaction structure and a wave coupling structure which comprises a wave-permeable dielectric block 15 vacuum-sealed to the defining walls of an aperture extending through the conductive body and forming a waveguide, the dielectric block extending over substantially the whole length of the waveguide. The block preferably has a thickness in the direction of wave propagation equal to n#/2, where n is an integer and X is the wavelength of waves propagated through the block. The wave coupling structure is applicable to conventional klystron amplifiers and oscillators, travelling wave tubes, magnetrons and cross field amplifiers.
