Abstract

1,083,384. Printing-apparatus. ROTAPRINT A.G. March 17, 1965, No. 11416/65. Heading B6C. An offset rotary printing machine comprises a control assembly including a plurality of control units I-V, Fig. 1b adapted to be driven by a motor 51 and arranged to rotate in either direction shafts 54 and 62, Fig. 3, which automatically control in a required sequence the movement of the various apparatus features into their operational position before printing and the tripping of the said apparatus features after printing. The motor drives a shaft 9 supporting cams 19-23 and, via gearing 11-13, a shaft 10 supporting cams 34-36, 39-41. The cams 19-23 move rockers 15 and according to the positions of microswitches 37 controlled by the cams 34-36, 39-41, solenoids 24 are energized and deenergized causing pulley and cable gear 47-50, Fig. 1b to be actuated. Actuation of cable 53 rotates the shaft 54 and operates means for rendering the printing plate more receptive to damping fluid, means for closing the plate cylinder grippers, and means for starting up the printing machine. A cam 34 energizes a solenoid in unit V so that a cable 59 is pulled and the shaft 54 rotated in the opposite direction, causing inking apparatus and the offset cylinder to be moved into their operative positions, after which the motor 51 is stopped. After printing the motor is re-started and the cam 36 in unit II stops the printing machine. The cam 41 causes the plate cylinder grippers to be opened and the plate is ejected when the machine is temporarily restarted. After washing of the offset cylinder the shaft 62 is reversed by the cam 35 and the cylinder is dried; unit II is briefly reactivated to pull cable 63 and stop the assembly and machine. The printing may be controlled by a programme card carrying marks indicating the sequence of printing of selected sections of the image, said card being advanced by stepping gear operated by pulses from a generator controlled by the revolutions of the impression cylinder or other means. The card stops if a sheet is incorrectly fed and the card is used to restart the motor 51 after printing. Alternatively the apparatus may be controlled by a counting device. A lamp 52 indicates when the shaft 9 is in its starting position.
