Abstract
A dielectric composition comprises a solid phase polyolefin and an amount of a voltage-stabilizing additive dispersed in the polyolefin sufficient to stabilize the polyolefin at high voltages, the additive being o-nitrotoluene, chloranil, 2,6 - dinitroaniline, 2,4,6 - trinitrotoluene, 2 - nitrodiphenylamine, 2,4 - dinitrodiphenylamine, o-nitroanisole, 2,4-dinitrotoluene, 2,6-dinitrotoluene, o-nitrodiphenyl, 2-nitroaniline, anthranilonitrile, 1-fluoro-2-nitrobenzene or di-p-methoxydiphenylamine or mixtures thereof with or without diphenylamine, or mixtures of diphenylamine with at least one of m-dinitrobenzene, 3- or 4-nitroaniline, 3- or 4-nitrotoluene, or o- or p-nitrochlorobenzene. Polymers mentioned are polyethylene, polypropylene and polyisobutylene. The polymers may be cross-linked with peroxides (e.g. di-cumyl peroxide, 2,5-bis-(t-butylperoxy)-2,5-di-methylhexane or 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di-(t-butylperoxy)-hexyne-3) or by irradiation of from 10-15 megarads before adding the additives. Polyethylene containing the additives may be used as insulation for 15 kv power cables and may contain carbon black, in small amounts for use as a jacketing composition and in large amounts for use as a semi-conducting composition.
