Abstract

1,082,970. Electro-photographic developer. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Dec. 17, 1963 [Dec. 27, 1962], No.49710/63. Heading G2H. Electro-static images are developed by a dispersion, in an electrically insulating carrier liquid, of solid fusible particles having an average size of 1 to 30 Á, and 3-30% by weight, based on the weight of the particles, of an agent which increases the charge acceptance of the solid particles, which agent is an ionic or non-ionic surfactant and is preferably a soap of magnesium or of a heavier metal. The fusible particles preferably comprise a thermoplastic resin (e. g. polystyrene, and polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, maleic rosin modified pentaerythritol, polymethacrylates, phenolic resins, polyesters, silicones and polyethylene glycol) containing 0-50% by weight of a colourant (e.g. carbon black optionally in polystyrene or a dye). Specified surfactants and soaps are metal naphthenates, resinates, stearates, soyates and acetylacetonates, pentacapryl phosphate, a stearic polyamine, naphthalene sulphonate, polyethylene glycol esters, and polyethylene amines and amine salts. The surfactant may or may not be in the fusible particles. The developer is preferably applied whilst an earth plate is maintained close to the surface bearing the electro-static latent image. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 835, 044.
