Abstract

1,082,841. Electric incandenscent lamps; discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 6, 1965 [Aug. 14, 1964], No. 33211/64. Headings H1D and H1F. An incandescent lamp or a tubular discharge lamp has an envelope of vitreous silica, one or both surfaces of which is formed with irregularities to increase the diffusion of the light. They may be in the form of indentations or protuberances and may be random or regular, e.g. longitudinal ribs or grooves. These may be formed by drawing the tube while hot over or through a die or mandrel, or, where they are to be formed on both surfaces, between a die and a mandrel. Alternatively, they may be formed by applying suitable tools to the hot surface. A coating of diffusing material may in addition be applied to one or both surfaces or they may be blasted with alumina.
