Abstract

1,082,816. Locking nuts and bolts; securing washers against loss. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. Oct. 20, 1964, No. 42771/64. Heading F2H. A resilient dished washer has abutment surfaces 26 on its convex face 24 produced by indenting which also forms inclined surfaces so that, when used with a nut or screw with a bearing face having abutments 38, on turning of the nut or screw in one direction, e.g. for tightening, the abutments 26, 38 engage to turn the washer but turning in the opposite direction compresses the washer since the abutments 38 ride on the surfaces 28. The washer is made captive on a screw by rolling the thread on a blank 22 with the washer in position adjacent the head 36. The inclination of the surfaces 28 may be greater than that of the helix angle of the screwthread so that the washer must be compressed for unscrewing. The indentations produce projections 30 on the concave side of the washer to prevent complete flattening of the washer on tightening. There may be indentations 44, Fig. 5, near the washer edge to produce protrusions to increase friction with the workpiece against which the washer is compressed. In a modification, Fig. 7, the abutments 26a and inclined surfaces 28a are arranged as shown and the washer 20a is used with a fastener having a bearing face with complementarily-shaped projections. The indentations need not produce the projections 30a on the concave side of the washer, Fig. 14 (not shown).
