Abstract
1,082,487. Phase equalizers. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Nov. 11, 1964 [Nov. 12, 1963], No. 45880/64. Heading H1W. The cut-off frequency of a waveguide is progressively varied along its axis by means of a longitudinal perturbing member which extends from a region of high electric field intensity to a region of high magnetic field intensity. As shown, a conductive rod 20 lies in a longitudinal plane normal to the electric field of TE 11 mode waves propagated in a round guide 21. One end of the rod lies near the centre of the guide near the region of maximum electric field and causes an increase in the effective cross-section of the guide. The other end lies near the wall of the guide in a region of high magnetic field intensity and causes a decrease in the effective cross-section. In the delay equalizer shown, progressively higher frequency components of an input signal are reflected back to the input waveguide 60 as the signal propagates along the waveguide 21. The delay characteristic may be adjusted by adjusting the positions of the end of the rod in slot 64 and by bending the rod by altering the tension in nylon threads 67. The circular waveguide 21 may be replaced by a rectangular one. The input waveguide 60 is connected to the intermediate port of a three-port circulator, the other two ports respectively furnishing the input and output terminals of the equalizer.
