Abstract

1282416 Waveguide phase equalizers MARCONI CO Ltd 21 Aug 1969 [10 Oct 1968] 48080/68 Heading H1W A reflective group delay equalizer comprises a waveguide loaded in a progressive manner with a longitudinally movable body of dielectric material. The equalizer is of the kind in which waves are reflected at different points along a waveguide having tapered cut-off characteristics. In the examples described, the cut-off frequency at a plane of maximum guide cross-section, is, whatever the position of the dielectric body, the lowest frequency in the band to be handled and the cut-off frequency at a plane of minimum cross-section is the highest frequency to be handled. The waveguides W have a constant narrow dimension and are tapered in the broad dimension as shown. The dielectric body B is also tapered and the adjustability indicated by a double-headed arrow. The Specification also describes modifications of these two embodiments in which the tapers are asymmetrical (Figs. 2, 4, not shown). The equalizer may be connected to one port of a three-port circulator of which the other two ports provide input and output terminals.
