Abstract

1,082,448. Thermionic valves. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 20, 1965 [Jan. 4, 1965], No. 53863/65. Heading H1D. In a discharge tube comprising an anode 1 spaced from a planar grid 3, the peripheries of the grid and anode being separated and insulated from one another by ceramic spacer 8, movement of the anode surface 2 relative to the grid 3 due to thermal expansion of the anode is prevented by the provision of a member 13 between spacer 8 and the periphery 14 of anode support 15, the dimensions and coefficient of expansion of member 13 being such as to compensate for expansion of anode 1 and its support 15 during tube operation. The member 13 has a higher coefficient of expansion and a lower thermal conductivity than anode 1 and its support 15, and may be of T1, Zr, Ta or Nb, the anode being of W or Mo. In an alternative arrangement, support 15 is formed integrally with anode 1, and member 13 is replaced by the inner leg of an anode terminal ring of U-shaped cross-section, Fig. 2 (not shown). Specific dimensions and operating temperatures are given.
