Abstract
1,082,385. Inductances; transformers; electromagnets. PLESSEY-U.K. Ltd. Aug. 17, 1965 [Aug. 17, 1964], No. 33448/64. Headings H1P and H1T. A toroidal magnetic core 1, 2, e.g. of ferrite or dust iron, carrying encapsulated windings 3, 4, is provided with one or more solid non-magnetic gaps having a known coefficient of thermal expansion to compensate for changes in the core permeability with changes in ambient temperature. In the figure, two gaps are shown comprising wedges 9, 10 of non-magnetic material. One of the wedges is of aluminium, brass, or plastics, and has a thermal expansion effective to compensate for temperature changes, whilst the other wedge is of silica or invar and has zero coefficient of thermal expansion. The core may be circumferentially prestressed and the core has resilience, either by being composed of resilient material or by the provision of a tension spring 8 mounted on an insulating terminal plate 6 for the windings. The wedges 9, 10 have screw adjusting means 11, 12 to vary the dimensions of the non-magnetic solid gaps.
