Abstract

1,138,604. Electromagnets; electromagnetic relays; electric transformers. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 28 Jan., 1966 [1 Feb., 1965], No. 4287/65. Headings H1N, H1P and HIT. An electromagnetic device such as a transactor used in a protective relay comprises a magnetic core 10 carrying a winding 8 and having mutually spaced opposing surfaces of polepieces 11, 12 which assume opposite polarities when energized, and an elongate magnetic member 13 movable along its major axis and mounted between the polepieces so as to define therewith two air gaps one on each side of the axis, and the opposing surfaces of the member and of the polepieces have mutually the same shape and angle of taper and the movement of the member is so limited that whereas the air gap lengths vary in response to movement of the member whereby to vary the magnetic circuit reluctance such lengths are constant over the whole opposing surface areas of the polepieces for any given position of the member. The member and air gaps may be of rectangular or part annular cross-section, and as shown the member is threaded on an adjustable mounting screw 14, has limiting non-magnetic stops 17, 18, and is coupled to a spring loaded pointer 20 movable around a scale 21 which may be calibrated to exhibit the inductance of the device.
