A reinforced mat or grid comprises parallel longitudinal metal bars 6 held in spaced relationship by metal connecting members such as a bridge 1 (Fig. 1) or a metal strip 5 (Figs. 2 and 3) each with surfaces to surround bars 6, retained therein by non-metallic adhesive 10, around at least half the circumference. The strip 5 has punched out portions 17 connected 6. Some or all of the connecting members may thereto at one end and bent around a bar 6 so that their free ends 20 hold the bars as shown. The connecting members may be an iron strip with a flat base and flanges perpendicular to the edges thereof in opposite directions, the base having punched out holes for the bars 6, a metal strip of U-shaped crosssection with holes in the base thereof of a diameter greater than the base width, a plate with rows of holes, a transverse rod with a semi-circular shell at each end or a strip cut to form bands which are bent around the bars have integral or attached spacers.
