A machine for cutting plate-like workpieces 18, Fig. 1, comprises a circular saw 3 which is movable longitudinally and transversely on a frame 1 and is pivoted so as to be able to effect cuts longitudinally and transversely of the frame, a wedge 7, Fig. 4, which is rearwardly of the saw for extending into a slot-cut in the workpiece by the saw, a supporting surface in the form of a plate 9 for the workpiece, and a supporting foot 8 which extends parallel to the supporting surface and is carried by the wedge for movement between the workpiece 18 and supporting plate upon movement of the saw, the foot being thicker than the distance by which the saw projects beyond the workpiece. The saw 3 is mounted on a plate 5 which is pivotally mounted in a slide 4 for positioning the saw for longitudinal or transverse outs, the plate being releasably fixed in position by a click device 6. The slide 4 is provided with rollers 11 for transverse movement along a slide 2 on the frame 1 which is inclined slightly rearwardly from the vertical. The slide 4 can be locked in position by a toggle 22 and is connected by a cord 21 to a counterweight 19 guided in a tube 20. The slide 2 is movable longitudinally of the frame along rails 13, 15. The wedge 7 is disposed rearwardly of the saw blade 3a for entering the slot-cut by the blade and is adjustably secured by bolts 30, Fig. 6, passing through slots 10, Fig. 4, in the wedge to the casing of the saw. The supporting foot 8 is secured to the wedge 7 and is disposed between the supporting plate and workpiece to lift the latter from the former during movement of the saw to ensure that the blade has fully penetrated the workpiece but does not cut the supporting plate. The workpiece may be resiliently held against the supporting foot during sawing by a tongue 27, Fig. 6, urged against the workpiece by a spring 28. Alternatively, a pair of runners 31, Fig. 9, may be mounted on a pivot 32 and urged by springs 33 against the workpiece. The foot 8 may have a slot, Fig. 7, through which the saw projects, a chamfer at its leading end for assisting insertion of the foot below the workpiece, and project in front of a line L, Fig. 6, perpendicular to the supporting surface and passing through the axis of the saw blade to ensure that an edge of the workpiece is lifted so that the saw blade cuts through the workpiece from its edge onwards. The supporting plate may be formed from a fine mesh grid.
