Guards.-A guard for circular saws comprises a back plate carried by the bench and carrying a front plate, in which is formed a curved race to guide a sliding shield adjustable over the edge of the saw. The back plate 1, tiltably clamped to a sector 2 carried on an arm adjustable on a pillar 5 by a screw 7, and locked thereto, has hinged to it a front plate 13, shown raised in Fig. 3 to permit sharpening &c. of the saw 31. The plate 13, normally kept in place by a T-headed bolt 11 engaging a slot 17, has curved walls 15 forming a race for an L-shaped curved shield 18. The shield 18 and one of the walls 15 are provided with pins 19, 16 serving as rack teeth engageable by a pinion 23, which, as shown in Fig. 4, is carried on a spindle 22 passing through slots 14, 21 in the parts 13, 18. A hand-wheel 25, slidably keyed to the spindle, is provided with a spring plunger 26 engageable in recesses formed in a washer 24 having a projection non-revolubly fitting the slot 14, and can be additionally locked by a nut 27. Alternatively, the pinion 2 may be mounted on a shaft operable through mechanism by hand or foot power. The curved guides 15 are made eccentric to the saw in order to prevent the upper end of the shield 18 from fouling the wood when thick material is being sawn. When a ground-off saw is used and the material is fed up an inclined block, the plate 1 is tilted relatively to the sector 2 and clamped by the bolt 33; the riving-knife 29, adjustably held between clamps 30, can accommodate itself to the new position of the plate 1 by virtue of its slotted' engagement 28 therewith.
