Abstract

1,079,978. Expanding-wheel gear. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON-HOTCHKISS BRANDT. Feb. 3, 1965 [Feb. 3, 1964], Ne. 4751/65. Addition to 990,391. Heading F2D. In a V-belt expanding pulley driven by a constant speed electric motor (not shown), for driving a washing drum in a washing machine (both not shown) similar -to that described in Specification 990,391, comprising an axially fixed flange 1 and a flange 2 moved axially by centrifugal cam masses 9, 12 which are pivoted at 11 on a motor shaft 3 and locked in the minimum diameter setting for a low output speed, e.g. slow speed wash, by an axially slidable spring-engaged lock-disc 18, in which, an electromagnet 17 is momentarily energized to attract the lock-disc, releasing the cam members 9, 12 which move the pulley flange 2 to a greater diameter setting through a plate 8 and push-rods 7 slidably mounted in grooves on the shaft, the lock-disc 18 is formed with shoulders 19, 20 which -serve to lock the cam masses 12 in intermediate positions b, c, axially stationing the pulley flange 2 at B and C to provide intermediate speed settings between the minimum and maximum A, D, each setting simply requiring momentary energization of the electromagnet 17 to release the cam masses from their appropriate shoulder, or stop, for engagement with the next stop on the plate 8, the maximum pulley setting D being achieved when the cam masses are completely released from the plate 8 as at d. The motor and V-belt arrangement are suspended on pivot arms to tension the belt by weight of the motor &c. which automatically restores minimum pulley diameter conditions when the motor stops.
