Abstract

1,079,779. Gas-blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. July 26, 1965 [Aug. 24, 1964], No. 31813/65. Heading H2B. A gas-blast circuit-interrupting unit comprises a metal chamber 43 having an apertured end wall 42, a tubular nozzle exhaust 73 and a surrounding stationary contact 74 both secured to the end wall 42, an insulating gas-flow guide 70 forming an extension of the metal chamber, and a tubular venting movable contact 19 movable completely through the insulating member. Compressed gas is supplied to the chamber 43 through a bifurcated gas inlet 110 and exhausts in opposite directions through the contact 19 and through the nozzle 73 and a lateral vent 121. A resistor (not shown) may be connected between an auxiliary contact 95 and the stationary contact 74. The Specification describes a three-pole circuit-breaker having three pairs of the above units housed in an earthed metal tank, the moving contacts 19 of each pair being carried by a conducting crossbar. The -units are carried by bushing insulators and a common high-pressure gas reservoir extends along the top of the tank between the insulators. A common hydraulic, pneumatic or electromagnetic operating mechanism moves the cross-bars and opens the inlet blast valves supplying each pair of interrupting units. The mechanical connection to each blast-valve includes a ratchet and pawl so that the valve is opened should the circuit-breaker trip open before the moving contacts have completed their closing movement.
