Abstract
A pad for use in an apparatus for cooling and humidifying air, or for demisting gases, consists of a polyurethane foam having a strandlike structure, the strands being partially covered by an adhesively-attached hydrophilic material. The hydrophilic material may be short-fibres or particles of inorganic substances such as asbestos, feldspar and glass wool or short fibres of organic substances such as cotton, rayon and linen or a powder of wood-cellulose, the organic substances being treated to resist bacterial degradation and mixtures of inorganic and organic substances may be used. The foam has between 6 and about 125 pores per linear inch (p.p.i.) and preferably between 10 and 45 p.p.i. and the fibres have a length of about 2 mm. The hydrophilic material may be applied to one or both surfaces of the pad or may be distributed throughout the pad. In applying the hydrophilic material to the foam pad the pad is wetted with an adhesive and the material applied to a surface and worked in by agitation of the pad or a current of air containing the material may be passed through the pad.
