Abstract

In a draftable staple fibre band or sliver the individual fibres are in parallelism and surrounded by a fixing agent which binds the fibres to one another so that the breaking length of the sliver exceeds that of a twisted roving of the same fibres untreated by fixing agent. The sliver is produced by forming e.g. by carding, doubling and drafting, a homogeneous, draftable staple fibre layer or strand; effecting an initial introduction of a dissolved fixing agent e.g. corn, rice or potato starch and/or polyvinyl alcohol, sodium alginate, casein or cellulose xanthogenate in aqueous solution; consolidating or condensing the layer into a sliver of small specific volume and withdrawing excess agent; depositing the sliver and bonding it by evaporation of the agent solvent; optionally, drying the sliver, forming a doubled fibre arrangement from a plurality of this sliver and subsequently rupturing the bond by passage through a drafting zone; subjecting the sliver leaving this zone to a further introduction of a dissolved fixing agent, which may be the same nature as, but in smaller concentration than, the initial agent, or a solvent to reactivate the previously introduced agent, consolidating the fibres and extracting excess liquid and depositing the final sliver. Introduction of fixing agent at the first stage may be accompanied by colouring matter, bleaching agent, finishing additives such as antistatic agents, fungicides, bactericides. Apparatus for the delivery under pressure and the application of the solution of, or solvent for, the fixing agent, Fig. 3 (not shown) comprises a reservoir (14) incorporating a heating coil (15) and to which excess agent &c. is returned, from application apparatus (6 and 23) coacting with squeeze rolls, via a pump and filter (not shown). The reservoir has provision for separate introduction of different constituents.
