A bitumen smoothing iron comprises a perforated hollow body 2 closed by a sole plate 1 heated by a burner having a nozzle 17 directing the flame onto the sole plate, the iron having a protective handle 25. Liquified gas is fed by an adaptor 32 to a jet 21 in a mixing tube 18 surround by a hood 22. Two circular burner nozzles 17, each consisting of spirals of contiguous flat and corrugated metal tape, are located in a manifold 16 and direct flame onto the sole plate, the flame being encouraged to hug the plate by a distributor 5. The insulated handle 25 is shielded by a layer of asbestos 11.
