Abstract
1,078,460. Beam axle suspensions. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. May 20, 1966, No. 22535/66. Heading B7D. A driven rear axle 1 is connected to the sprung mass 7 of a vehicle by a trailing A-frame 2, with its feet 2a, 2b rigidly secured to the axle and its apex 2c pivotally mounted on the sprung mass 7 by a connection permitting movement of the A-frame longitudinally of the vehicle and two trailing arms 3, 4, each pivotally connected to the sprung mass 7 and to a foot of the A-frame or to the axle casing near one of its ends, to form with the A-frame a substantially W-shaped linkage. Preferably the pivotal connections of the ends of the arms 3, 4 are ball joints 8, 10 and 9, 11, the latter pair being on an axis passing through a universal joint 15 of a drive shaft 13, 14 and the pivotal connection at the apex 2c is a ball 5 slidable in a tube 6 secured to the sprung mass 7. Alternatively the apex 2c is connected to the sprung mass by a shackle. The axle is sprung by coil springs 12 or by torsion bar springs comprising inward extensions (3a), (4a) (Fig. 2, not shown) of the arms 3, 4.
