Abstract

1,131,479. Motor vehicle rear suspensions. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 12 Oct., 1967 [3 Nov., 1966], No. 49268/66. Heading B7D. A De Dion tube assembly for a motor vehicle suspension comprises two parts 24, 26 having overlapping end portions extending coaxially one into the other, an annular ball bearing 86 fitted between the parts 24, 26 so as to prevent relative telescopic movement therebetween, andan annular resilient bushing 28 fitted between the parts 24, 26 and arranged to resiliently resist relative torsional movement therebetween. The De Dion tube 20 interconnects the carriers 16 of rear wheels 18 driven through universal joints 76, shafts 72 and resilient couplings 70 by differential gearing 50 bolted to front and rear arms 52, 54, 56, 58 connected to frame members 10, 12 by annular resilient bushings 60. Trailing arms 28, 30 connected to brackets 32, 34 on the tube 20 form in conjunction with upper arms 40, 42 a Watts linkage locating the carriers 16. A panhard rod 80 provides lateral location for the tube 20. Helical springs 36, 38 act on the arms 28, 30 and telescopic dampers 44, 46 act on the tube 20. The resistance offered by the bushing 28 to relative torsional movement of the tube parts 24, 26 provides roll resistance.
